I love working with Carlie! I had been feeling fatigued and was struggling to get through my workouts. It would take me days to recover from a lifting session. I went to Carlie with the goal of improving my nutrition so I could build muscle, have more energy during workouts, and recover more quickly. She taught me I was under-eating and after sticking with her recommended macros, I really felt a difference in how I was feeling. The macros were very sustainable and I never felt like I was on a “diet” or restricting myself. My goal was to feel better and not only did I feel better but I gained muscle and lost fat. I couldn’t be happier with my results!
I was the person who swore I would never, ever, in my life, track food. It was too much time and effort and I refused (those were my exact words to a coworker over a year ago who now makes fun of me when we have conversation about tracking macros). I was the person who thought "eating healthy" was eating the least amount of calories, or eating a salad, or eating anything that doesn't have a high sugar count.
I learned tactics to better manage my work schedule. I started to eat breakfast prior to my work day starting so I could start strong early with protein. My work life balance is now much more balanced. I now have time built into my schedule to eat lunch. If I'm going into the office I now eat breakfast prior to going or I bring my breakfast and my lunch into the office (instead of eating a bag of Doritos and calling it lunch). I also purchased a desk treadmill and became obsessed with walking and working. Any time work would get stressful and the anxiety would start creeping in, I would just jump on the treadmill and bump up the speed to walk it out. It also helped make sure I was meeting my daily step count which I'm not sure if I have ever prioritized steps but now I thoroughly enjoy getting to walk during my work day.
My sleep has steadily improved over the months. I would take hours to fall asleep and I never wanted to wake up in the morning. I would lay awake in bed playing through everything that happened throughout the day, overthinking various stressors, analyzing each conversation, then making mental lists of all the tasks that I need to complete. In the beginning, I was taking 5-10 mg of melatonin and I would still take 2+ hrs to fall asleep after the lights were off and phone was down. As the months went on I was able to stop taking melatonin. I was able to start winding down my evening early by turning off electronics 30 min prior to bed, then spend some time playing through my day in a positive way by picking things that made me happy throughout the day and my one high and one low. It no longer takes hours to fall asleep and it's much easier to wake up in the morning.
Throughout these last several months, I learned more about eating and what healthy actually means. It's been a game changer to look at a nutrition label and not worry about the calorie number. I went from never eating breakfast to waking up and making a protein-heavy breakfast prior to sitting down at my desk. I went from never eating lunch to having bowls and meals prepped and planned where I could quickly eat in between calls. As a picky eater, my opinion of healthy always equated to gross. However, I've been able to find several delicious protein staples that I can easily prep and cook. I've never consistently eaten meals especially breakfast and lunch and I finally found something that I can manage and consistently prep and eat. I went from not knowing what a macro was to having conversations with my intern at work about tracking macros and explaining what it means. I went from knowing nothing about protein to talking with my dad about how he's not eating enough protein. I went from never cooking to my sister asking me for all my meal prep plans.
I am incredibly proud of the changes that I have made and the difference it's made in my life. The change has had a profound impact on my life. In the beginning it started out about losing pounds but quickly became so much bigger than that. While yes, the number on the scale decreased, I was most proud about everything I learned, being able to manage stress and anxiety more effectively, and being able to fall asleep quicker.
When I first started nutrition coaching I thought I was eating relatively well. Working with Carlie made me realize I wasn't getting enough calories or the right calories to meet my performance goals. After getting on a macro plan and speaking with Carlie weekly about my goals, I noticed a change in my body composition as well as my performance. Since starting nutrition coaching at the beginning of 2023, I have PR'ed my 5k, 10k, half and full marathon. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to make a measurable change.
Nutrition is both scientific and straightforward as well as emotional and nuanced. One of Carlie's skills that I haven't experienced as much with other nutrition coaches is her empathy and understanding of the emotional side of things. As someone who has counted macros on and off for many years, but also has a history of an eating disorder, I can sometimes get anxious and neurotic if I track my food too closely or for too long. Carlie encouraged me to back off of tracking and to eat more intuitively. This was very scary for me at first and I was hesitant. I started with just the weekend and when that felt good, moved on to not tracking food during the week either. Now I've gone months without tracking and I feel so good both physically and mentally. It feels so freeing to not be tied to the bathroom scale or the food scale and I have Carlie to thank for that :)
